Happy Reformation Day!

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Today marks the 494th anniversary of Martin Luther posting his 95 Theses on the Wittenburg Church Door — the  act which unofficially marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. You know what that means — only 6 more years until the party is totally off the chain. We should probably start planning the 500th anniversary celebration now.

Justin Taylor posted a nice article filled with good resources that will help you better understand the Protestant Reformation, and as usual he does a very nice job. One book I’d like to recommend is Michael Reeves’s The Unquenchable Flame: Discovering the Heart of the Reformation. It was published by Crossway in 2009 and is a very accessible paperback (just 200 pages written in plain language) that covers the general background and all the major players of the Reformation: Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, and the Puritans. I cannot recommend this well-written book highly enough.

Enjoy Reformation Day, and I pray that you’ll take advantage of Halloween parties in our town (perhaps even your own, or your Life Group’s) to build relationships and share the Gospel with neighbors and people in our city.

Living a Life of Submission” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Join us this evening at 5pm for the next installment in our Exodus series, “Living a Life of Submission.” In tonight’s passage, we will cover Exodus 4:18–31 and consider the concept of submission. Like all of us, Moses was a model of both submission and rebellion. We will learn from his life (as well as the life of Pharaoh) that submission to God means that we are obedient to him in every area. When we fail to obey God, we are living in rebellion, and God takes rebellion very seriously. When we recognize our rebellion, repentance and submission are required to again walk under God’s blessing. We hope to see you tonight at 5pm!

Joy and Pain in the Christian Life

Friday, October 28th, 2011

I came across this quote from Tim Hansel the other day. I trust that it will be fodder for thought and prayer for you — especially on a Friday.

Pain is inevitable, but misery is optional. We cannot avoid pain, but we can avoid joy. God has given us such immense freedom that he will allow us to be as miserable as we want to be. I know some people who spend their entire lives practicing being unhappy, diligently pursuing joylessness. They get more mileage from having people feel sorry for them than from choosing to live out their lives in the context of joy. Joy is simple (not to be confused with easy). At any moment in life we have at least two options, and one of them is to choose an attitude of gratitude, a posture of grace, a commitment to joy” (featured in Moreau, Corwin, McGee, Introducing World Missions: A Biblical, Historical, and Practical Survey, 180).

Are you a miserable Christian or a joyful Christian? If you are miserable, what does repentance look like for you knowing that the fruit of the Spirit is joy, and Jesus died so that our joy might be complete? If you are joyful, does your joy stem from Jesus and His finished work on your behalf, or from your love for the world?

Reflecting on Exodus 4:1–17

Monday, October 24th, 2011

For the past three weeks, we’ve been learning how we are to deal with our doubts . We learned that the answer isn’t to have more self-confidence, but rather greater faith in God and His Word. We learned that the answer isn’t to be more self-aware, but to be more aware of who God is and what He has spoken to us. We learned that the answer isn’t to try to provide a solution, but to trust in God and His provision for us.

But today, you will still face doubts. If you’ve bought into any kind of a silver-bullet theory of change, this will be very upsetting to you. Many Christians think that our main problem is a lack of knowledge, a lack of information. But keep in mind that Moses didn’t lack information. For example, God told him clearly, “And they [the people of Israel] will listen to your voice” (Ex. 3:18a). But Moses countered with, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice” (Ex. 4:1a). Moses’ problem wasn’t a lack of information; it was his unbelieving heart. A simple study, a three-week series, even an intensive discipleship effort won’t cure you of your doubts.

Contrary to what you’ll hear in songs and movies, it’s a bad idea to be true to your heart (perhaps especially when 90s boy bands tell you that’s a good idea). Our hearts are continually telling us to doubt God and His Word and to put confidence in ourselves and what we think or feel. We must fight what seems natural and normal and instead decide to trust God and His Word — even when that seems counter intuitive. The battle begins again today as we seek to walk by faith and not by sight. What will it look like for you to walk by faith today and in the days ahead?

Dealing with Doubt: Part III” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Join us this evening at 5pm as we finish up our first mini-series (“Dealing with Doubt”) in our yearlong study of Exodus. In this third and final installment, we will cover Exodus 4:1–17 and watch Moses’ doubts grow even more pronounced. Thankfully for Moses (and for us), God deals with him graciously and provides for him in his weakness. That’s exactly why we don’t have to worry when we doubt — because God graciously responds to our doubt by revealing Himself and His Word and by providing for us in our weaknesses. We hope to see you tonight at 5pm!

The 10 Days Ends Today…

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

…but your involvement with Living Water International, the Wells Project, and the water crisis doesn’t have to. Please remember to go online here and make your donation to Living Water. Donate whatever you saved by drinking only water for the last 1o Days — and consider giving some on top of that as well. Every dollar you give helps to provide access to clean water for someone living in poverty largely because of the water crisis.

The 10 Days staff posted a devotional I wrote on their blog. You can check it out here. Let’s continue to meet physical and spiritual needs in the name of Jesus.

Update: Link should be fixed now.

Happy Birthday to My Wonderful Wife

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride;  you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace.” (SOS 4:9)

Kendra, I am so thankful to God for you. I praise Him for the 10 birthdays we have now celebrated together, and ask that He would give us many more. Few people will ever know how much God has used you and continues to use to make me the husband, father, pastor, and friend I am. I love you!

Applying Exodus 3:13–22

Monday, October 17th, 2011

In last night’s message, “Dealing with Doubt: Part 2,” we learned that our doubts must be fought with the truth of who God is and what He has spoken to us. God revealed Himself to Moses as, “I AM WHO I AM,” and then explained in four different ways that He was sending Moses to the people of Israel and Pharaoh.

Today is Monday, and your week is already underway. As an employee, a student, a mom, or a dad, you are going to be faced with challenges and trials this week — challenges and trials that are more than you can handle. Once you recognize that, doubts are going to arise in your heart and mind. People and problems will seem very large, and God and His Word will seem very small. It is in these moments that you, like Moses, must return to the truth about who God is and what He has spoken to you. God is the great “I AM.” Whenever you are weak, He is strong. He is able to accomplish anything He desires through you.

Further, God has sent you in His authority to be about the work of making disciples. Some people talk about vocational ministers and missionaries by saying they are “full-time.” The truth is, every one of us is a full-time minister and a full-time missionary. As Jeff Vanderstelt has said, God simply routes our paychecks through different companies. When doubts arise in your mind, remember that your God has sent you to do His work. You disciple under His authority.

What doubts have already arisen in your heart and mind this week? What will it look like to walk by faith in the midst of your doubts?
