Preparing to Battle Unbelief

Friday, May 11th, 2012

This Sunday night, we’ll begin a four-week series called “Battling Unbelief.” This topical sermon series will take us through many different passages of Scripture in each of the four weeks and is based on principles taught in the fifth chapter of Tim Chester’s book, You Can Change: God’s Tranforming Power for Our Sinful Behavior and Negative Emotions.

If you’d like to learn more about Tim, you can check out his website here. Not only is his site full of great content, but it’s all written in real English (not American English). This means that he writes “programmes” rather than “programs” and things like that. What fun.

You certainly don’t need to read You Can Change in order to greatly benefit from our upcoming series. The principles Tim identifies in the book  come straight from Scripture like the texts we’ll be preaching from each week. However, if you’d like to read through the book, you’ll be even more prepared to battle your own unbelief through faith in God and His Word. See you this weekend!

The Exodus Series Finale…Tonight at 5pm!

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

After 9 months in the Book of Exodus, it all comes down to this. We’ll be finishing the book tonight in a message called “The Power of God’s Grace,” which covers chapters 35–40. There are many powerful forces in our world, but none are as powerful as the grace of God. God’s grace is the only force powerful enough to change the sinful human heart.

This evening, we will learn:

  1. God’s grace compels us to give generously.
  2. God’s grace empowers us to obey fully.
  3. God’s grace enables us to serve freely.
  4. God’s grace moves us to follow faithfully.

We hope you can join us tonight for the Exodus series finale and as we kick-off Building the Future.  See you at 5pm!

The Root and Fruit of Idolatry” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

We have just two weeks left in our Exodus series after tonight, but this book is definitely not fizzling out. Tonight’s message is entitled “The Root and Fruit of Idolatry” and covers Exodus 32. In this pivotal chapter, the Israelites demand that Aaron make for them an idol because Moses was not coming back as quickly as they wanted or expected. Rather than rebuking them, Aaron made them a golden calf. Then the people had a full-out pagan worship festival complete with a feast, dancing, and…well, the text leaves the reader to assume.

In this evening’s message, we’ll learn that the root of idolatry is unbelief in God and His Word, and when that root is allowed to grow, fruit is produced. The fruit we see from idolatry in this passage is the desire for control, the fear of man, and the love of self. We hope you can join us tonight at 5pm for worship!

God-Honoring Worship” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Tonight we are tackling seven (7? Yes, 7!) chapters of Scripture. We’ll be covering Exodus 25–31 in a message called “God-Honoring Worship.” Most of us would agree with the statement that we are to worship God, and many of us would even say that all of our lives need to be about worship. But what is worship? And more importantly, what is God-honoring worship? We’ll seek to answer those questions this evening.

If you are new to New Life or have been visiting for a little while and would like to meet some of our members and church leaders, we invite you to stay for our Guest Dinner immediately after the service. See you tonight at 5pm!

God Demands Purity and Enables Worship” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

In tonight’s message (“God Demands Purity and Enables Worship”), we’ll be covering Exodus 23:20–24:18. Now that God has revealed Himself and His Law to His people, the people will be required to respond. Any encounter with God requires a response, and this encounter is no different. When people encounter God, they either respond by hardening their hearts (as Pharaoh did) or with repentance and faith (as Israel will). What will our response be?

We also hope that you will join us at 4pm for our first Corporate Prayer Meeting. During that time, we’ll have Preschool care for children up to five years old, and Truth and Grace for kids four or five on up. See you tonight!

Putting Skin on the Ten Commandments” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Prior to Spring Break, we saw God’s holiness on display in Exodus 19, and learned of His holy standard by focusing for two weeks on the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20. In tonight’s message, we will look at Exodus 21:1–23:19 in a message called, “Putting Skin on the Ten Commandments.”

In this long passage of Scripture, God helps Israel to understand how the Ten Commandments were to be lived out in everyday life. “Do not murder” is the overarching command, but what happens when someone is killed in an accident? What happens when someone’s animal kills someone else’s animal? What if someone’s animal kills a person — and the animal had hurt someone before?

All of these kinds of questions are answered in Exodus 21:1–23:19. But what is most clear isn’t the questions that are answered — it is the question that is raised. And that question is, “With all of the bad things that happen in our world, how will things ever be made right again?” We’ll see that Jesus alone can restore our broken world, other broken people, and broken people like you and me. We hope to see you tonight at 5pm!

Forgiven to Forgive Part 2″ Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope you can join us for the second part of our mini-series, “Forgiven to Forgive.” In tonight’s message, Deacon Matt Bevers will be leading us through Paul’s letter to Philemon. In that letter, we’ll learn that we are able to forgive others because God has forgiven us.

Far from being just a good example for us to follow, God’s forgiveness provides the power for us to forgive others. Apart from God’s grace, we cannot forgive as God has forgiven us. But once we have received God’s forgiveness, we are empowered by His Spirit to forgive others as deeply as we have been forgiven. We hope to see you tonight at 5pm!

How Can a Righteous God Forgive Sin?” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

Over the next two weeks, we’ll be taking a break from our Exodus series to dive into a two-part series we’ve called, “Forgiven to Forgive.” We hope you can join us this evening as Pastor Kyle preaches through Psalm 130 in a message entitled, “How Can a Righteous God Forgive Sin?” The Bible reveals that God is both righteous and forgiving, and that there is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood. However, not just any blood can be shed for the forgiveness of sins — it must be the blood of one who is perfectly righteous, and only Jesus meets that qualification. God forgives sinful people who call out to Him through faith in Jesus. We hope to see you tonight at 5pm!

God’s Law: How Free People Live In Freedom Part II” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

In last week’s message, we looked at the first four of the Ten Commandments. We saw very clearly that God’s Law was given to His free people to help them live in freedom. But God’s people – including us – fail to keep His Law time and time again, which points us to our need for a Savior.

In tonight’s message over Exodus 20:12–26, we will cover the final six commandments. While the first four focused on how we are to live in freedom by loving God, the final six focus on how we are to live in freedom by loving other people. Just as with the first four commands, our failure to keep these commands completely or consistently will reveal our need for a Savior. We hope you can join us tonight at 5pm!

God’s Law: How Free People Live in Freedom” Tonight at 5pm

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

There is much confusion about God’s Law. Some regard it is the rules we need to follow to earn salvation. Others regard it as a set of commands that only pertained to the nation of Israel and think they have nothing to do with the Christian life. But both of these are incorrect views.

In this week’s message on Exodus 20:1–11 we learn that God’s Law is His commands to free people concerning how they could continue to live in freedom. If the people obeyed the Law, they would please God and enjoy the freedom that comes with living life the way God intends. If the people disobeyed the Law, they would recognize their need for a Savior who could keep God’s Law perfectly. The Law functions in our lives in the same way: it reveals God’s will for our lives and points us to Jesus, our Savior who kept God’s Law perfectly and died and rose for our failure to keep God’s Law perfectly. We hope to see you tonight at 5pm!
